2010 Kaapzicht Pinotage, Stellenbosch
2010 Kaapzicht Pinotage, Stellenbosch, $17
Recently I had the opportunity to try my first Pinotage and I have to say I loved it. So, when presented with another opportunity to experience another vintners Pinotage, I had to take advantage of it. Needless to say, the experience wasn’t quite the same. While Kaapzicht 2010 Pinotage is interesting it doesn’t have the complexity of the first Pinotage I tried. Kaapzicht has a beautiful deep ruby color and a pleasing aroma of black fruit. From the first sip you will find medium tannins, a dark chocolate flavor, a slight tobacco flavor and that’s about it. But to be fair, the first Pinotage I tried was a 2006. It had the opportunity to age for 4 years longer than the Kaapzicht and develop more complex nuances and flavors. I think I will buy another bottle of two of the Kaapzicht and let it age to see if the flavors develop into something more reminiscent of the 2006 Fort Ross Pinotage.
Overall, a very drinkable wine. I wouldn’t be afraid to give this as a hostess gift and I would be glad to receive it. Don’t be afraid to try this wine; but maybe purchase two bottles, one for now and one to age. And yes, I think it will age well.
